If you’ve seen the Season Two finale, All Hell Breaks Loose, and the Season Nine finale, Do You Believe In Miracles, you may have noticed some visual similarities between the respective death scenes.
Now look at what Dean says when Sam dies:
Hey, look at me. It’s not even that bad. It’s not even that bad, all right? Sammy? Sam! Hey, listen to me. We’re gonna patch you up, okay? You’ll be good as new. Huh? I’m gonna take care of you. I’m gonna take you care of you. I’ve got you. That’s my job, right? Watch out for my pain-in-the-ass little brother? Sam? Sam! Sam! Sammy!
And what Sam says when Dean dies:
Shh. Shh. Shh. Shh. Shut up. Shut up. Just save your energy, all right? Oh, man. We’ll stop the bleeding. We’ll — we’ll get you a doctor or — or I’ll find a spell. You’re gonna be okay.
But why the mirroring?
After Sam’s death in Season Two, he came back- but it was hinted by the YED that he came back different. ‘Are you sure that what you brought back is one hundred percent pure Sam?’ This functions as unintentional foreshadowing of both the Soulless arc- when Sam really did come back with something ‘missing’- and foreshadowing Dean of returning as a demon.
When Sam returned, he seemed to have lost his regard for ‘the sanctity of life and all that crap’, as Dean puts it. When asked, Sam says that he’s trying to become Dean, because that’s the only way he’ll be able to survive when Dean’s gone.
But it isn’t until Dean’s demon phase that he becomes truly cold-blooded in a way that he never was before- but Sam could be almost as cold a killer, when faced with losing Dean. When he killed the crossroads demon in Season Three. After Dean’s last Mystery Spot death. The beginning of Season Ten.
By comparing the changes that the Season Nine death worked on Dean to the changes the Season Two death worked on Sam, SPN is asking us what makes humans so different from demons. And the opening scene of Season Ten- a demon is being tortured, she accuses the torturer of having lost all his humanity, the camera pulls back and it’s Sam– keeps asking that question.
